Dried Dipper gourds are used to make colorful Christmas decorations. Smaller gourds are sometimes painted for tree decorations. The good news is gourds will keep for years if you protect them from mice (they like the seeds inside).
What a masterpiece. Figures are created with Mini Birdhouse or Bottle Gourds. A small Bushel Gourd is used for the Manger.

This Bottle or Birdhouse Gourd is painted to appear as a ghost jumping out of a Jack-O-Lantern.
Though this is hard to see in this format, birds of any color or type painted on mini birdhouse gourds (no pun intended) are wonderful pets without the mess. My favorite was a Quail with the perfect little topknot.
